Resumes and Artist Statements

David and Trish Charity

Welcome to our bio page. Here you will find some of the exhibits where we have participated. You may be able to see our work if the exhibits travel to your area.

We really enjoy working together and bouncing ideas back and forth. It's an extraordinary blessing to have both of us interested in the same art form. It never ceases to amaze me that we can work side by side and have our pieces look so different. This is true even when we are working with the same call for entry criteria.

Since we also commute to work together we have lots of time to develop ideas. This enables us to have a clear idea on the direction a piece will be going as soon as we get home. It also means never having to explain why I just HAD to get that piece of fabric. Having our own built in critique group is wonderful. He has a great eye for balance and design.

We hope you enjoy our work and would love to hear from you.

Artist’s Statement

I grew up in San Diego, California. As a child I enjoyed drawing cartoons and dreamed of becoming a cartoonist. Like so many others, this dream was not realized. I eventually found myself in the engineering field as a printed circuit board designer where I continue to work today. I find quilting very uplifting and a break from the hustle and stress of my daily job. Creating a quilt has given me the opportunity to share from my heart, illustrate my emotions and values, exhibit my love of scripture, and share other interests, which are very eclectic.

I like to use bright, vibrant, contrasting colors. I don't have a favorite color but tend to use warm colors or eath tones. Sometimes the use of colors and combining them can be very challenging because of my partial color blindness. I love to embellish my quilts with tactile things to add dimension. My favorite things to add are scrim (cheese cloth), yarns, metal, beads, and layers of transparent materials. My favorite part is when I get out the sewing machine and see how much thread I can use on a quilt. I consider my quilt finished when I'm out of thread. (Not really, but close.)

I think that a quilt has turned out well when it causes someone to stop and ponder the message and the reason behind its creation.

Artist’s Statement

Growing up around quilts I did not start quilting until the early 1980's. Having a lifelong interest in art, I started making traditional patterns but with a twist. I have had my traditional based quilts published in books and magazines as student work of the authors. A new book by Rose Hughes will also include one of my quilts. I have won awards for my hand quilting but now quilt by machine.

I have exhibited my work in several shows and have been juried into both local and national venues. I was honored to be included in the first annual members show for Quilt Visions and to have had a quilt travel in a special exhibit called West Coast Wonders with Quilts, Inc.

I was attracted to contemporary quilts early in my quilt making. A fabric painting and design class from Phil Beaver gave me both confidence and skill propelling me in a new direction. Expanding my skills through class work with several contemporary quilt artists I have enjoyed working with a variety of new materials and techniques. Starting out with an idea or inspiration for a piece but no actual road map allows me to experiment with design, fabric painting, beading and unusual surface embellishments. I truly find the creative process exciting as themes blossom in ways that were not expected.
