In trying to portray an open plains landscape I selected a color scheme of late summer. I wanted to capture a feeling of distance and “big sky”.
Layering and inserting small piping strips gives the quilt a rolling hills look. Distressed felt forms an inner organic edge making the piece come alive but is still contained by the background. Using bobbin work to add the silver thread work helps draw the eye across the quilt while adding more horizon lines. The center quilt was layered on black background after both were quilted.
This quilt was a study in textures from the hand dyed and commercial batiks to the distressed felt and textured black fabric. Minimal, subtle quilting was done to place the emphasis on the fabric and design.
