It Felt Like an Approaching Storm…

I fell in love with the sky fabric.  It spoke to me of summer storms rolling across the low hills of the Mid-West. I wanted to create a feeling of leaves being pushed ahead of the storm.

Using batiks and home-decorator fabrics I used the Fast Pieced Appliqué technique for construction.  I felted wool and silk fibers into the quilt to integrate the landscape into the border.

Working with paper clay I created leaf embellishments using the backs of real leaves. These were painted with black acrylic and rubbed with various Pearl-Ex powders to give depth and interest.

Free motion machine quilting was done to add texture and shape to the hills.
